According to the group, Lawyers Without Boarders, about 1,979 persons are in various Nigerian prisons awaiting execution. Of this number 527 were sentenced to death in 2016 alone. This was revealed by the group as part of celebration to mark the 15th anniversary of the World Day against Death Penalty. Three persons were executed in Edo State, Soth south Nigeria in 2016.
The theme of this year’s celebration is Poverty and Death Penalty.
