EX—Minister Laments absence, kidney transplant centre in S’ East Nigeria.

Speaking at the weekend, during the kidney Disease Conference, organized by Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi, NAUTH, A former Minister of Health, Dr. Tim Menakaya, a former President West Africa College of Surgeons, Prof. Okechukwu Mbonu and the Chief Medical Director,

(CMD), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Anthony Igwegbe, have lamented  on lack on Kidney Transplant Center in any part of south-east Nigeria, and the trio said people of the south east are the most backward in Nigeria in terms of addressing the kidney disease problem which incidentally is very huge in the region.

Dr. Mekanaya who was the chairman of the occasion said that it was during his tenure as the Minister of Health that NAUTH, was made a kidney dialysis center, but regretted that since he left; nothing has been done by subsequent administrations to improve on what he established in the institution in addressing kidney disease problem.
