Kaduna — Kaduna state governor Nasir El-Rufa’i yesterday said the present situation in the state in where only 36 Per cent of nursing mothers get the required healthcare service is not acceptable. He said the aim of his government is to deliver for the citizens’ better health and longer life expectancy.  The governor made the remarks at the state Healthcare Summit yesterday.

“We seek this vast improvement in healthcare outcome for our people because the present situation is unacceptable. Kaduna State has the second highest HIV prevalence in the country, and only 36 per cent of mothers have the benefit of being attended to by skilled birth attendants. Current coverage of measles vaccine is 56 per cent, reflecting a dismal immunisation coverage for 12-23 month-olds of only 35 per cent. Latest available data suggests that only a paltry two per cent of under-fives with malaria are treated with ACTs,” he said.

He said there are about 100,000 avoidable deaths every year, adding, “this government refuses to accept fatalism. This government refuses to accept that it is too broke to save lives.”

He said government was committed to devoting more resources to improving life chances of the people.
