The Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization (GAVI) on Thursday 8th March, 2018 said no fewer than 800,000 unvaccinated children died in Nigeria in the last 5 years. The Chief Executive Officer, Seth Berkley of GAVI, made this known during a stakeholder meeting in Suleja, Niger.

Berkley said a recent survey revealed that Nigeria had only 30% coverage of immunization, added that the figure differed from what some health workers had always presented.

The CEO stated that lack of children’s access to routine vaccination caused outbreak of diseases such as Measles, Meningitis and Yellow fever. He also stated that the children unnecessarily died because they were not vaccinated, pointing out that his organization is working hard to strengthen routine immunization in the country.

Berkley noted that government and other stakeholders must work hand-in-hand to accelerate and strengthen routine immunization; also traditional rulers could help in ensuring children’s access to vaccination as they are close to the people.
