The Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr Dogo Makama, said 89 people died from fire disasters in Kaduna State between January 2012 and October. 2013.
Makama made the disclosure at a two-day workshop on Fire Prevention and Health Hazard with the theme “Towards Fire Prevention, Control and Management.’’ in Kaduna on Tuesday.
Represented by Hajia Aisha Abbas, SEMA’s Director of Planning and Research, Makama said 432 cases of fire outbreaks were recorded in 2012, while 116 cases in 2013.
He said 58 people lost their lives, 109 were injured and 35 others were rescued in 2012, while 31 people died, 40 injured and four persons were rescued in 2013.
The executive secretary said the state lost up to one billion naira from fire outbreak in 2012 and N7.5 million in 2013.
Makama said the causes of the fire outbreak were carelessness and suspected electrical fault.
He stressed the need for the people of the state to be vigilant during the dry season, saying that any object could trigger fire outbreak.
In his remark, Gov. Murkthar Yero, said the state government had approved the establishment of 23 Sub-fire Service Stations in all the local government areas.
