According to Reuters, an anti-polio campaign volunteer woman was shot dead today and her granddaughter injured by unknown gunmen as they left a house. The incident occurred in the southern city of Kandahar in Afghanistan. The campaign involved advocacy from house to house.

Though no group has claimed responsibility, Islamic militants are suspected as they believe that vaccination is anti-Islamic and a means of spying.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only polio-endemic countries left in the world.
