Doctors at Apollo hospitals in India have recommended robotic surgery as one of the best for cancer surgery. Robotic or Robot-assisted surgery integrates advanced computer technology with the experience of the skilled surgeons. This technology provides the surgeon with a 10x magnified, high-definition, 3D-image of the body’s intricate anatomy.

The surgeon uses controls in the console to manipulate special surgical instruments that are smaller, as well as more flexible and maneuverable than the human hand. The robot replicates the surgeon’s hand movements, while minimising hand tremors. The surgeon thus can operate with enhanced precision, dexterity and control even during the most complex procedures.

Over the years, surgical oncology commonly known as cancer surgery, a branch of cancer medicine that deals with the removal of cancerous growths in an organ has remained a challenge in most countries. According to cancer specialists at the hospital, the forms of cancers that are amenable to surgical treatment are called solid organ cancers and are different from those involving the blood or bone marrow elements such as leukemia or blood cancer, or lymphatic glands, lymphoma.

Solid organ cancers include cancer of the mouth, throat, voice box, intestinal system, liver and pancreas, genitourinary organs, breast, brain and bones. Speaking on the recent advances made by doctors at the Indian hospital, a Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Ajit Pai, who noted the importance of surgery in cancer treatment said in almost all the cancers, surgical intervention is necessary to obtain a diagnosis as well as cure the patient.
