National President, Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) Dr. Obinna Ogbonna has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to initiate a bill to the national assembly that would ban public servants from using public funds for foreign medical tourism.
He said that, “In doing this, it will make the nation’s policy makers and implementers to ensure that we have standard healthcare system that will cater for the interest of everybody”.
Ogbonna gave the advice in Ilorin, Kwara State capital on Friday during the investiture of the state new executive council of the union held at the Micheal Imoudo National Institute for Labour Studies, Ilorin.
According to him, “It is worrisome that a lot of money had been committed to the foreign medical tourism on the name of seeking for medical attention abroad and this has continued to have adverse effect on the health development of Nigeria”.
“By the time the present administration led by president Buhari put a top to such foreign medical trips, it will ensure that we have good equipment, instruments and other infrastructure.
“I want to advise that if President Buhari’s government will bring a law that will make government officials to stop medical tourism outside, we will be all there to harness and put our health care system in the right perspective”.
