Gonorrhoea is becoming untreatable due to resistance to the drugs in use. The alert was delivered by the Chief Medical Officer of England, Sally Davies following the report of a study supported by Public Health England; 15 resistant strains of gonorrhea causing organism s were identified.

 

Gonorrhoea is the second most common sexually transmitted disease after Chlamydia in England.

 

The alert was sent to all General Medical Practitioners and Pharmacies; doctors were advised to give optimal treatment in cases of gonorrhea infection, using the right drugs in the right doses and for the appropriate length of time.

 

The public was advised on protective sex.
