As the world marks this year’s Cancer Day, Director General of National Sports Commission, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, has urged sports stakeholders in Nigeria to wary of their health by ensuring regular checks. Elegbeleye, who made the call over the weekend in Abuja where the Federal Ministry of Health organized a novelty match to create awareness on cancer scourge, assured that the NSC would partner with relevant stakeholders to fight all manner of killer diseases.

“The Health Ministry’s initiative is laudable. If everybody is aware of the dangers posed by cancer, all of us will be proactive and check at appropriate times,” Elegbeleye said. “I believe many people are dying of cancer but with regular tests, it can be reduced to the barest minimum.” Coach of the national U-23 team, Samson Siasia, who was also a guest at the event, commended the organisers for using footballand sports to create awareness. “This is one deadly disease we all must rise up against,” Siasia said. “It is an initiative we must identify with and I am proud to be involved,” the former Super Eagles striker added.
