The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is hosting the 64th Annual Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) conference for CDC disease detectives, featuring the most recent lifesaving and groundbreaking investigations that the CDC’s researchers have accomplished.

The conference was opened Monday in Atlanta by CDC Director Tom Frieden before EIS staff began exchanging details about their investigations. Throughout the conference, which runs through Thursday, officers will formally present their research findings.

Some of these investigations have placed the detectives in the world’s most challenging public health situations. One of the places that the EIS frequently sends its officers is West Africa and locations within the U.S. that support the response to Ebola, and there will be several presentations concerning Ebola at the conference including “Readying the Responders,” “Public Health Response to an Imported Case of Ebola Virus Disease,”and “Geospatial Analysis of Household Spread of Ebola Virus in a Quarantined Village.”

Other topics at the conference will include “Norovirus Syndromic Surveillance Among Commercial Tour Bus Passengers,” “Severe Respiratory Illness Associated with a Nationwide Outbreak of Enterovirus D68,” “The Role of Internet Meet-up Sites and Mobile Device Applications in Facilitating an Early Syphilis Outbreak,” “Parking Prices and Walking and Bicycling to Work in U.S. Cities,” and “Chikungunya and Dengue Virus Infections.”
