The US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recommended that those most at risk of HIV infection should take anti-retroviral drug, Truvada, daily to reduce their risk of infection. This followed results of study which showed that the risk of infection could be reduced by about 70-90 percent.
The high risk groups include the following:
- People who are in relationships with HIV positive persons.
- Gays and bisexuals who are involved in polygamous relationships
- Drug users who use unsterile instruments
- Heterosexual people who do not use condom during casual sex.
The study was conducted at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco, USA and involved about 600 adults. According to the CDC, about 1 million Americans live with HIV and about 40,000 are infected each year.
