There are more men than women in China due to the very stringent family planning policy of one child per couple put in place in 1979. By 2020, it is estimated that the population of women will surpass that of men by 30 million. Based on this, an economist has two options; two men marrying one wife and men marrying men.

 

However the situation is about to change, the Government has decided to lift the restriction on the number of children; Chinese couples can now have two children, the law takes effect in January 2016.
