The wife of a medical practitioner at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Dr. Ekpo Edet, has given birth to quintuplets after 10 years of marriage.
Edet, whose wife gave birth on Monday through a normal delivery, has said that they had been without a child for 10 years.
He said that his joy knew no bounds when his wife was successfully delivered of five babies, three girls and two boys the same day. He said, “I want to thank God almighty for this precious gift of five children. He is a faithful God; the children are kicking and in good condition. “God has been faithful to my family; five children at a go is indeed a wonderful blessing to me and my wife.
Chief Medical Director of UCTH, Dr. Thomas Agan, has described the development as a joyous one, especially for the couple. He said, “I am very excited to see one of my staff in a happy mood. The lord has done it for them. Five children at a go is a very big blessing to the couple. “This is the first time in the history of the state that a woman is delivered of five children at a go and the babies are in good condition.
He also said that he is happy that the UCTH has also set a record of delivering five children safely from one mother. The quintuplets are weighing between 1.45kg and 1.75kg. There are currently in the Special Care Babies Unit of the hospital.”
Earlier, wife of the state governor, Dr. Linda Ayade, had, during a visit to the couple, described the quintuplets as a blessing to the state and Nigeria at large.
During the visit, Ayade made a donation of N1m to the couple and another N500, 000 to the medical experts who made sure the babies were delivered safely.
The wife of the governor also donated an incubator machine to the hospital on behalf of the state government with a view to enhance the activities and service delivery of the hospital.
