Against the background of the Federal Government’s suspension of doctors’ residency training in all federal hospitals and the subsequent sack of some doctors, the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said their sack may not impact on the Ebola health emergency plaguing the country.
The minister at a news conference in Lagos at the weekend claimed that the doctors were never involved in the treatment and management of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) cases: “As a group, they have not been participating in Ebola disease cases. It is not as if we are missing anything yet.” He was responding to questions on why the Federal Government chose to suspend the training programme given the Ebola health emergency instead of negotiating with the doctors so as to meet their demands.
The minister explained that the suspension affected those undergoing their training in federal hospitals alone: “We do not have power to suspend the training in Lagos State hospitals and tertiary hospitals in the other states. It affects only Federal Government hospitals.
