Scientists have asked farmers to reduce the amount of antibiotics given to animals to reduce the risk of resistance of germs to antibiotics now currently in use. Farmers use antibiotics for treatment of infections, prevention of infections and for weight gain of animals.

In most countries animals consume more antibiotics than humans; in the US, antibiotic consumption by animals is about 8,900 tonnes annually while humans consume about 3400 tonnes in the same period.

The world is on the verge of total resistance to antibiotics as there is now some resistance to COLISTIN, the ultimate antibiotic of the day.
