The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, plans to distribute boats, fishing nets and accessories to artisanal fishermen in Kebbi to boost fish production.
Mr Kevin Tekpat, the Federal Director of Agriculture in the state, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.
Tekpat said that the beneficiaries would be grouped into clusters and cooperative societies with a maximum of five members each.
“Each group will be given one boat, fishing gears and other accessories on loan.
“The Federal Government will pay 50 per cent of the cost while the farmers are expected to pay the balance in instalments.”
The director said that the government had upgraded the fish market in Yauri Local Government Area and provided necessary facilities to boost fish farming and and ensure job creation.
He explained that extensive training on the method and techniques on fish preservation would be conducted for beneficiaries.
He, therefore, advised the beneficiaries to take advantage of the training to enhance their productivity and improve their economic status.
NAN reports that the Government of Kebbi had, in partnership with the National Association of Fish Farmers, registered 6,000 artisanal fishermen.
He also said that the government had constructed five pilot fish ponds for the training of youths in small and medium-scale fish farming. (NAN)
