Minister of Agriculture Dr Akinwumi Adesina has said that the federal government will give Cross River State substantial support and encouragement to help boost its substantial investments in agriculture. The minister made the promise when he visited some of the agricultural facilities in the state.
At Songhai Integrated Farm in Itigidi, Abi Local Government Area of the state, he said the federal government’s support will also help to further diversify the state’s economy and stimulate the value chain.
“We have plans to support the amount of agric investments in this state. We are happy with it. It is worth commendation. We shall encourage them,” he said.
He particularly commended the Songhai facility which the state government said was worth over N2.2 billion.
He said that the 100 people trained by the state on the facility will be incorporated into the federal government’s youth agriculture initiative to further empower them to be more productive, while urging the youth to understand that the only greener pasture is agriculture.
Governor Liyel Imoke disclosed that being a non-oil producing area within the Niger Delta they had to take the opportunity created by the federal government in agriculture to create wealth and ensure value chain.
“We have to change from a plantation economy because the state has land which has not been translated into wealth. The change is not focused on just plantation but also on processing and marketing and we have to start from here to drive it,” he explained
