The Federal government of Nigeria through the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research Development has the sickle cell drug, Niprisan from the shelf due to rising cost. Hitherto, it was licensed to a pharmaceutical company for sale and distribution but the price has steadily risen to N3,500.00, an amount too for those affected. Henceforth the drug can only be obtained from the Institute at a subsidized price of N300.00

About 3 percent of Nigerians are affected by the disease.
