As part of government efforts to prevent flood in the State, the Ogun State Ministry of Environment has commenced dredging of 14 waterways across the State. Speaking at the on-going dredging exercise at the Olosun River in Oja –Odan, Yewa South Local Government Area, Commissioner for Environment, Ayo Olubori represented by the Director, Flood and Erosion , Olatunji Adenuga said the dredging exercise was part of government’s efforts to control flood during the rainy season. Olubori explained further that six to seven months duration was stipulated for the dredging exercise across the three Senatorial Districts of the State, with major rivers and waterways to be dredged with dredging machine ‘Swamp Boggy’ moving from one location to the other.
Major rivers to be dredged include: Oja Odan (Olosun Stream course), Yewa North, Lukosi Streem course Abeokuta, Erilope (Stream course) Ago-Iwoye amongst others. “The dredging exercise is part of the promise made by the Governor to the citizens to ensure that no lives or properties are lost to flood, because as a responsible and responsive government, we don’t need to wait till disaster like flood happens before we take the necessary preventive measures, that over 13 million naira will be spent for the dredging exercise across the three senatorial districts”, he disclosed.
