Crops worth over N2.3m, were destroyed following last Friday’s flood that wreaked havoc at Old Kutunku community in Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT. The Vice Chairman of the Nasara Fadama Group, Malam Rabiu Usman, who disclosed this while conducting our reporter round the affected farms, said various crops that were ripe for harvest, such as okro, rice, yam, maize, cassava and vegetable farms were destroyed by the flood. He added that grown up banana, orange, cashew, kolanut, plantain, sugarcane and guava farms were also destroyed.
According to him, the flood which was as a result of heavy downpour that lasted for almost 19 hours from last Thursday tillFriday afternoon also washed away beans, tomatoes as well as pepper that were planted close to the river bank. He explained that the flood which over flowed the Gwagwalada River, prevented farmers from crossing the river to their farms, saying the farmlands, which have been the means of the group’s livelihood was destroyed overnight.
He said, “For the past 35 years that I have been into both dry and rainy season farming across this river, I have never experienced this kind of devastating flood. And this is where I have been sustaining my life and my family, just like other members of my group but everything has gone,’’ he lamented.
He said members of his group have always been the major suppliers of various kinds of food crops that are being taken to Gwagwalada market on daily basis, adding that an estimated N80,000 ugu leaf, he already had arrangement with a buyer over, was also washed away.
