A teenage boy, 18, who has been complaining of abdomen pain was found on ultrasound and x-ray to be harbouring a malformed foetus in his abdomen. The foetus is believed to be his twin who found its way into his stomach through his umbilical cord during the pregnancy over 18 years earlier.
The malformed foetus weighed about 2.5 kg with very long hair, teeth and bones and survived on supply from the teenager through an umbilical cord–like structure attached to his blood supply.
The condition which is called “Foetus in Fetu”, is extremely rare, found in about one in five million live births and involves a foetus feeding on its twin like a parasite. Only about 200 cases have been reported.
The boy,Narendra, is from Utter Pradesh in North India.
