Gambia bans female circumcision.

One of the smallest countries in Africa, The Gambia, has banned female circumcision, now globally referred Female Genital Mutilation (FMG). The announcement was made by the President of the country but the legislation to leverage the ban is yet to be enacted.

Female circumcision is quite common in Africa and involves the total or partial excision of the clitoris; possible complications include bleeding, scarification, vaginal stenosis, obstructed labour and reduced sexual pleasure in women.
