Gombe State Government on Wednesday said it had begun the registration of miners in the state.
Alhaji Babagoro Abdulkadir, the state’s Commissioner for Science and Mineral Development, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe, that the exercise would generate data base of miners for socio-economic development of the state.
He said that the registration would show the specific activities of the miners, considering the vast nature of the sector.
Abdulkadir said it would also help government to formulate policies relating to mining activities for the development of the sector.
“Because mining is a very wide area, we want to know what the miners are mining and secondly it will assist government in formulating policies relating to mining in the state.”
According to him, the miners are the beneficiaries of the registration, with added advantage of accessing the fund to develop the sector.
He added that those who did not register would not benefit from the programme, while their operation was at a risk.
The commissioner called on the licensed miners to partner with the ministry to develop the sector.
