It is a known fact that admitted patients are prone to contracting communicable diseases while on admission. A recent study at the University of Leeds has further confirmed this and that those in multi-bed rooms are more prone than those in single rooms from hand contamination by healthcare workers by about 20 percent.  The situation does not appear to change much even if the healthcare worker washed his/her hands after each patient.
According to the British National Health Service, the healthcare-acquired infections cost the country about one billion pounds and 5000 deaths a year.
The study stresses the need for adequate hand washing by health professionals and thorough cleaning of infected wards.
