An Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Segun Abudu of Lagoon Hospital has noted that due to poor public awareness about joint pains, the hospital has decided to take its free awareness training to Ajah area of Lagos. He noted that majority of people in the community had been crippled due to joints pain.

Abudu who made the remarks at a recent JPS in Ajah area of Lagos, noted that all joint pains could be taken care of through medical intervention and expressed worry that most people live with such pain until the worst happens.

Abudu said to correct people’s perception about joint pain, the hospital has established the joint pain school about two years ago and has been providing public education to Nigerians who care to benefit from the training free of charge. However, he explained that the Apapa school which runs weekly on Wednesdays had attracted many beneficiaries which prompted the need for the establishment of the school in other parts of the country for more people to benefit, stressing that the Abuja and Port-Harcourt branches would soon be established.

He reiterated that the objective of the JPS is to help reduce the number of people in the country living with joint pains by educating them on painful joints and related ailments as well as how to prevent occurrence. “When we launched the JPS Apapa in 2011, it was the first of its kind in Nigeria and at the time, we did not envisage how popular these classes would become. We have indeed been pleasantly surprised at the testimonies from participants and the success of the classes,” he noted.
