Our beauty to a large extent depends on our skin and hair apart from the facial appearance.
Your skin type is determined by how much — or how little — oil your skin produces. Genes, diet, stress level, hormonal fluctuations, medication and even your skincare regimen all determine how much oil your skin produces and you may find your skin type changes frequently going from dry to oily to normal — all in the course of a matter of months. This is normal.
“Skin Test” to tell what skin type you have. To do this, wash your face, pat it dry, then take a few pieces of rice paper or lens-cleaning tissue paper and press on different spots on your face. If your skin is oily, the paper will stick, pick up oily spots and become translucent. If the paper doesn’t stick or pick up any oily spots, your skin is likely dry. If it sticks in your t-zone (forehead, nose and chin) then you have combination (or normal) skin. Most women actually have combination skin.
The tips below can help your skin glow and hype your beauty.
1. Drink Water
Our body is made up mainly of water, we must take in about 2.5 -3 litres of water daily; this could be from a combination of water and food. However; the average person seldom consumes enough water.
Drinking beverages that contain caffeine (coffee, tea and soda) or alcohol makes pass urine more and so really does not give more water.
Water helps rid the body of toxins, pollutants and waste that can make the body look and feel sluggish. And although it’s not technically a moisturizer, water keeps our organs healthy and functioning—including the largest organ of the body—the skin.
2. Use Sunscreen
Avoid direct and prolonged exposure to sunlight especially in the tropics; some skins are more sensitive than others.
Dark skin people are less apparently affected because of melanin but people who are always exposed to intense sunlight like farmers in the tropics look older than their age.
Light skin people of color are less protected against harmful UV rays of the sun that can cause skin cancer, premature aging.
In the tropics it is advisable to use hats, sunglasses and avoid being in the sun for long; it darkens your facial skin (the most exposed) making you look older. You may also decide to use sunscreen before exposure to sunlight.
3. Wash Your Face at Night
Ensure to wash your face every night before going to bed; our skin has pores (openings) through which water (sweat) and oil come out of body,; washing the face every night removes any clog blocking these pores. This clog could result from face make-up ( the chemicals can harm the skin if left overnight), dirt, environmental pollutants, germs, bacteria and excessive oil which accumulate on the skin during the day.
Washing the face at night removes the above so that the skin can breathe and be rejuvenated.
4. Stop Smoking
Like sun damage, smoking is a major factor in the wrinkling of the skin. Nicotine in cigarette smoke causes blood vessels and capillaries to constrict, decreasing the circulation of oxygen within the skin, which is necessary for the health, maintenance and growth of skin cells.
5. Use Cosmetics with Caution
Using products that can discolor skin of color, such as bleaching creams, pimples creams and products with harmful chemicals can cause skin damage; such skin damage could lead to scars and possibly keloids.
Always do research and consult a professional about the potential side effects of products and procedures before use.
Products that are not formulated for your skin type can cause problems. For example, products made for oily skin can further dry out dry skin. Oily or rich moisturizing formulations that are perfect for dry skin can make oily skin shiny or can clog the pores, causing breakouts. Whether your skin is normal, oily, dry, combination, sensitive or mature, seek out products meant for your special skin.
There is a reason why certain foundations, eye shadow shades and lip stick colors look better on you than others. Skin tones as well as skin undertones really do have an impact on what makeup you should use. A foundation that is too light or too dark can make you look like you’re wearing a mask. Certain makeup colors might make your skin look muddy or sallow, while others will give skin a gorgeous glow. And makeup is not made to change your natural appearance. The perfect makeup enhances your beauty.
Finally, only use cosmetics you are comfortable with not because they are trendy.
6. Get Enough Sleep
Sleep deprivation can cause puffiness (eye bags), circle around the eyes, ‘sunken eyes’, and dull-looking skin. Stress that results from poor sleep can serve as catalyst for some skin conditions such as pimples. We should strive for at least eight hours of sleep a day; we should also try to go to bed before 11pm every night.
7. Consume Beautiful Food
The food you eat can help your skin. Foods containing antioxidants can help reduce the aging process; such foods include several fruits and vegetables—mangoes, cucumber, avocado pear, oranges, bitter leaf, pawpaw, carrots, etc. All these foods contain vitamins and minerals. These foods work better than cosmetics some of which come with side effects.
Exfoliation whether done at home or in a beauty salon can help beautify your skin. Domestic exfoliation can be done weekly preferably at weekends while you could visit the professional once in three months. Exfoliation involves the removal of the dead skin on your face; our skin cells die all the time and are continuously replaced by the body.
