British scientists at Imperial College, London have genetically modified mosquitoes that carry malaria parasites to make them infertile. When infertile, they would not be able to multiple thus reducing the population. However the scientists say further safety tests need to be done before the mosquitoes could be released into the population. This will take about ten years, the Nature Biotechnology report says.
Two genes were modified to render the female mosquito completely barren but one modified gene can be passed on to offspring by the mosquito mum or dad with apparent reduction in fertility.
