Waking up several times throughout the night maybe worse for your mood than sleeping a shortened amount of time, according to a study conducted by a team at John Hopkin’s School of Medicine.
The study experimented inpatients in: forced awakening, delayed bed times and uninterrupted sleep.

When your sleep is disrupted throughout the night, you do not have the opportunity to progress through the sleep stages to get the amount of slow wave sleep that is key to the feeling of restoration.
The study authors said many individuals with insomnia achieve sleep in fits and starts throughout the night and they do not have the experience of restorative sleep.
