The Katsina State Government said an estimated 2.6 million children would be immunised against polio disease in the state.

The state Governor, Aminu Masari, stated this while inspecting polio immunisation in Katsina.

Masari said already, government had procured and distributed over 2.9 million polio vaccines for the success of the exercise.

Masari, who was represented by his deputy, Mannir Yakubu, called on local government chairmen to collaborate with all the stakeholders to ensure each child within the age bracket was immunised against the disease.

He appealed to the parents to give the necessary support and cooperation to health officials, warning that government would deal with any parent sabotaging the exercise.

The Governor said his administration had designed a blue print to overhaul the health sector in the state.

He explained that the blueprint, which was drawn by professionals, would focus attention on reform in the primary healthcare sector.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr Ahmed Qabasiyyu, had said that about 13,000 ad hoc staff were recruited for the exercise in the state.

Qabasiyyu said for the past two years, no polio case was recorded in the state.

He commended traditional rulers and donor agencies for the success recorded in the fight against the disease, and appealed for more support to totally eradicate the disease.
