ACUTE shortage of health staff is a major problem in Elgeyo Marakwet county. Yet this is rated as one of the best counties in the health sector. The Kenya National Union of Nurses secretary general Benson Biwott said the county has a shortage of 251 nurses.

He accused the health executive for ignoring a call by the union to employ more medics in the county hospitals and dispensaries. “Each dispensary should have three health practitioners, eight in health centres and more than 16 health workers in the county hospitals,” Biwott said. He added, “Without enough workers, overworking will continue to be a problem.”
