Murang’a county residents have been urged to stop consuming food displayed or sold in unhygienic conditions. County Health executive Susan Magada said hawking of food poses health risks to residents as it leads to outbreak of food and water borne diseases.

She said the county government will intensify surveillance of food outlets to ensure those selling unhygienic food to unsuspecting residents are arrested and charged.

Magada and her Agriculture counterpart Albert Mwaniki were addressing the media in the county government offices on Friday. Last week, one person died and scores of residents hospitalised after eating poisonous meat at Kabati trading centre. Magada and MWaniki said all food outlets must have valid health licences and the food handlers medically examined.

Magada urged residents to be cautious when eating meat products, including ‘mutura’ and soup and ensure they buy them from inspected sources. “We are also asking all food handlers and traders to ensure they have proper storage facilities for their food products to avoid development of salmonella and e-coli bacteria,” she said. Mwaniki asked traders to be buying meat from the county slaughter houses, which undergo proper inspection, instead of buying from sources outside the county.
