The government on Tuesday lifted a travel ban barring passengers Liberia from entering Kenya. The ban, issued in August 2014, was issued to guard against the spread of the Ebola virus following an outbreak in West Africa.

“Following the successful control of the outbreak in Liberia, the temporary suspension of travellers has been lifted with immediate effect,” Health CS James Macharia said in a statement.

Macharia noted that the transmission rate had declined with the number of cases reported in Guinea and Sierra Leone ranging from 9 to 22 a week. “We will continue to monitor the situation in Sierra Leone and Guinea closely with the aim of lifting the suspension as soon as they are declared Ebola-free by the World Health Organisation,” he said.

Macharia however said all travellers coming to Kenya from Liberia and other countries will be screened until the outbreak is fully controlled. The WHO said the death toll from the virus in West Africa had surpassed 10,000.
