A young mother in Yorkshire, United Kingdom has just discovered how dangerous a kiss on the mouth of a newborn by apparently well visitor can be. Her child developed oral herpes virus infection after a mouth kiss by a visitor who apparently had oral herpes. She noticed a cold sore on the swollen lip of the baby while breastfeeding. On examination by the doctor, the baby was found to have sores at the back of the mouth and had to be admitted for treatment with anti-viral drugs by drip for about five days. The baby was investigated to rule any effect on the liver or brain.
Newborns have low immunity to diseases and unnecessary handling by adults (visitors or relatives) should be discouraged.
