The Prof. therefore called on Nigerians to verify their genotype before getting married as it has been estimated that around 2 percent of new born in Nigeria are affected by Sickle cell Anemia giving a total of at least 150,000 affected children born every year in Nigeria alone. He added that this is responsible for approximately 8 percent of all the infant deaths per year.
