The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Mr.Tunji Bello, has advised residents to take precautionary measures against harmattan. The commissioner, who spoke in Alausa, Ikeja, explained that according to the weather forecast from the Ministry of the Environment, the temperature this week would be between 25oC and 31oC.

Bello said, “The weather is going to be hazy while dusty warm days will be experienced early in the morning and fog is expected in the evenings. “Motorists and other road users are advised to be cautious as visibility will be impaired; they should reduce speed limits and observe road signs in order to prevent accidents.

“We also urge residents to observe basic health and environmental precautionary measures such as regular handwashing with soap and water as the weather may cause catarrh, pneumonia, induce asthma, and other respiratory-related illness which may be rampant during this period.” Bello also warned residents who still patronised cart pushers to desist from the act, pointing out that it was inimical to the waste management policy of the state government. He said, “Our resolve is environmental sustainability and a healthier citizenry. We must therefore join hands to attain this goal.”
