The Lagos State Government has established 197 Parks and Gardens in 10 months in various parts of the Lagos metropolis, in furtherance of its greening programme in the city.
Mrs Titi Anibaba. the Managing Director, Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), disclosed this at an interactive session with newsmen in Lagos on Friday.
She said that the parks and gardens were created between January and October 2013, adding that some 17 new parks and gardens would soon be added to the existing ones.
“This is part of the Lagos State transformation agenda aimed at beautifying the state and make it more befitting for tourists and visitors to stay in.
“The plants and gardens are beneficiaries to human beings because the plants release oxygen to sustain human lives, while humans release carbondioxide in exchange, for the benefit of the plants.
“The importance of tree planting and creation of parks and gardens across the metropolis cannot be overemphasised, “ Anibaba said
The director said that apart from the greener and healthier environment, the usual hideouts for criminal had been transformed into recreational centres, thereby reducing criminal activities.
She said that the successes of the Lagos state government in combating climate change with the greening programme had continued to make the state to be a reference point.
“The cheapest way to combat climate change is through the greening initiative, such as planting of trees and creation of parks and gardens.
“Over 4.6 million trees have been planted on various routes across the state, thereby creating job opportunities in the process, “ the director said.
Anibaba, therefore, urged the people of the state to cooperate and support the greening initiative of the state government.
