The current outbreak has so far claimed 101 lives out of 175 confirmed and suspected cases of Lassa fever. This is contained in the statement from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control; eighteen states and the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja are affected.
The current outbreak started in Niger State, North central Nigeria in August 2015 but no report was made until January 2016.

The disease is endemic in Nigeria but the fatality in this outbreak is the highest ever recorded.
