The current outbreak of Lassa fever has now reached 64 Local Government Areas in 16 states and the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja; 79 persons have so far died and about 212 affected.

This is according to the Minister of Health in the meeting held in Abuja yesterday with Commissioners of Health of all the states of Nigeria; he said the outbreak of the infection was a national embarrassment.

The main objective of the meeting was to facilitate discussions on the control of lassa fever.

He cautioned Nigerians against the traditional habit of drying grains, cereals and other food items in open space.
