The Head of the Incident Management System and Deputy Minister-designate of the Ministry of Health, Tolbert G. Nyenswah, announced yesterday that Liberia will be declared Ebola free in 25 days if no new cases are reported.

At the Ministry of Information regular press briefing yesterday in Monrovia, Minister Nyenswah explained that Liberia began a recount of the 42 day virus free period following the death of the last Ebola patient on March 27. “We have just completed 17 of the 42 days and we are left with 25 days to go. Liberia is making significant progress in all aspects of the fight against the deadly Ebola virus disease and we hope to continue until Liberia is declared an Ebola free nation,” said Nyenswah.

He explained that all the family members and community dwellers listed for contacts during the crackdown of the last Ebola case have completed the 21 days surveillance and have been reunited with their families.

Minister Nyenswah emphasized that the IMS will continue to be more vigorous in carrying out its contact tracing in Monrovia and other places in the country to ensure that the 42 days are completed. “Our surveillance team continues to update us particularly at border points due to the situations in Guinea and Sierra Leone that have the propensity to lead us into another outbreak,” Minister Nyenswah maintained.

He disclosed that the IMS is also lobbying with both local and international partners to raise funds to support Ebola survivors. “The government and MOH reaffirm that Ebola survivors should continue to abstain from sex or to observe safe sex through consistent condom use for a minimum period of three months,” he cautioned. “Our psychosocial team is taking reasonable measures to prevent stigmatization of survivors and promote respect, dignity and compassion towards all survivors, partners and families,” the Minister reiterated.

He called on the general public to continue to respect all survivors, their partners and families, protecting their dignity and showing them compassion at school, in the workplace, community and other public gatherings.
