Deputy Health Minister Tolbert Nyenswah has told a gathering that Liberia has lost its Ebola free status. “We are disappointed that a 17-year-old boy died from the Ebola virus on June 28, 2015,” Deputy Nyenswah disclosed at the Ministry of Information press briefing Tuesday. He noted that Liberia intended to continue its achievement on a clean sheet.

Nyenswah said the remains of the 17-year-old boy were property buried in keeping with Ebola safety measure. Although, Deputy Minister Nyenswah said they don’t know the source of the infection, members of the public need to remain calm.

He stressed that Liberia has the capacity to contain any outbreak, disclosing “we didn’t de-commission all of the Ebola treatment centers; ELWA ETU is still functional while the ETU in Margibi County has been immediately re-activated.”

He noted that there is no need to build any new ETU. The Deputy Health Minister also noted, “We are also yet to establish whether he travels out of the country. We shouldn’t speculate. We will inform you when we gather all the information.”

Nyenswah, who is also head of the Incident Management System, said a team from the Health Ministry is currently listing contacts, which the 17-year-old boy might have interacted with. For her part, Health Minister Dr. Bernice Dahn confirmed that specimen collected from the remains of the 17-year-old student, who died in Margibi County tested positive of the Ebola virus.

Minister Dahn stressed that the Ebola fight is not over due to the re-emergence of a new case in Smell-No-Taste Community in Margibi County. The Health Minister is rallying the support of various communities across the country if the newest fight against the virus must be won. Minister Dahn also assured that the ministry has the capacity to contain any new outbreak, emphasizing “We know how it is spread and we know how to stop it.”

She called on the public not to keep sick people in their homes and should avoid touching dead people. According to her, this new case, which is a test for the Ministry of Health would result into the testing of all people who died in the country
