In solidarity with the government and people of Liberia, the President of the Republic of Niger and the President of the Republic of Benin yesterday paid a visit to the country as part of both countries’ contribution to the fight against the deadly Ebola virus in Liberia.
The visit of both countries’ Presidents according to them is intended to show their supports to the people of Liberia as well as ECOWAS’s support in the fight against the Ebola virus in Guinea, Sierra Leon and Liberia.
Speaking during a brief discussion with President Sirleaf at the Roberts International Airport, the President of Niger His Excellency Mohamadou Issoufou pledged his country’s support to the ongoing fight against the Ebola virus in Liberia noting that the President and people of Liberia are in his heart because they are all part of ECOWAS and the African Union and as such, they should work in solidarity.
He said, ” Niger and Benin involvement in the fight against the virus is important since we all are members of the sub-regional organization and the Africa Union and this makes it an obligation for us to help our sister country (Liberia)”. According to President Issoufou, financial assistance is significant in eradicating the disease from the three Ebola hit countries thereby calling on the international community to cancel all debts from the three West African countries due to the economic crisis caused by the outbreak of the virus.
The President of Niger however called on all Liberians to do away with politics and focus on the fight noting that the war against the virus is not a political thing but rather requires the collective efforts of all Liberians. President Thomas Yaya Boni of Benin also committed his country’s support to the eradication of the virus in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. He added, “We all have to put hands together if Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone must be Ebola-free because this is not about the government”.
Meanwhile, President Sirleaf has extended gratitude to both countries’ Presidents for what she termed as solidarity visit to the people of Liberia. President Sirleaf also extended thanks to the ECOWAS community for its level of support to Liberia during the ongoing fight against this vicious, uncompromising, remorseless demonic Ebola virus which has claimed the lives of several people across the country.
