Ministry of Health Program Manager for Child Health Humphreys Nsona said Malawi has managed to reduce under-five mortality by 5.4 per cent per annum between 1990 and 2015.

Nsona made the remarks at Lilongwe Hotel on Thursday during the countdown campaign advocacy workshop. Nsona said with the use of mosquito nets, proper vaccines, disease treatment and control has helped to achieve this.

Nsona explained that, “Malawi is a pioneer in implementing evidence based policies to save children’s lives, meeting Malawi Development Goals (MGD’s) four and five on reducing maternal dearth and newborns.” He then said Malawi can sustain the gains of newborn survival if health services in the country are armed with evidence solutions, enough staff and making sure that in hospitals there are enough medicine and equipment.

“We can sustain the gains by ensuring that pregnant mothers deliver in hospitals because they can be given proper care and support for the survival of both the mother and the child. The country needs them for development as healthy people contribute positively to the development of our great nation,” he added. The countdown case study will be launched on 18th June this year at Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
