A mass vaccination Programme against meningitis A in Africa has been a “stunning success”,-Experts say.
More than 220 million people were immunized across 16 Countries in the Continent’s meningitis belt.
Unlike other vaccines, the MEN Afrivac was designed specifically for Africa and in 2010 a mass vaccination campaign was started.
With the advent of this new vaccine, there has been a sharp decline of new cases since 2010.
The disease has virtually disappeared from Africa according to Dr. Marie Pierre Preziosi of the World Health Organization.
She advised that the new vaccine be incorporated into routine immunization programmes to avoid recurrence
