A gold mining pit in Shadadi, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, North-central Nigeria collapsed on six miners recently. There is subsisting ban on mining by artisans in the State.
The miners were said to have left home for work at the pit but never returned; this necessitated a search party which discovered the bodies of four of the miners in the pit, the other were still alive but injured; they are now recovering in hospital.
The story was confirmed by the Niger State police Command spokesperson, ASP. Bala Elkana; he said the pit had been condoned off and that investigation has commenced.
