The Deputy Director Port Head, Mr. John Okwori of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has disclosed to journalist that NAFDAC has confiscated fake drugs and unwholesome products worth N68.2 million at the Akanu-Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, saying that the consignments were unlabelled chemicals, drugs in Chinese language only, fake sex enhancing devices, and counterfeit labels of popular products like: Chelsea Dry gin and Amarula drink. Okwori said 11 large cartons of chelsea dry gin labels that can be used to package gin worth N64, 764, 000 was seized. The Deputy Director Port Head, Enugu said as part of NAFDAC efforts to rid the country of fake and unwholesome products, the agency had arrested one Mr. Ugochukwu Uguegbulu for importing fake drug known as Gyno Aaktarh Vaginal capsules (200mg) from Dubai. According to Okwori, other consignments seized by the agency were imported without approval from NAFDAC and abandoned by the owners even as investigation was on to track the importers. NAFDAC Port Head disclosed that they were under strict directive from Acting Director General of NAFDAC that the relatively young Akanu- Ibiam International Airport should not be allowed to be turned into a smuggling channel and as such “we are proactive and equal to the task.” “All travelers and importers are hereby warned to abide by National Regulations guiding imports/exports into the country.
