No fewer than 14 medical doctors including the physician to ailing Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State are expected to appear before the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal for various offenses ranging from improper conduct to negligence of duty.

The MDPDT has the status of a High Court because its judgement can be appealed only before the Court of Appeal.

They will be arraigned at the sixth sitting of the tribunal taking place at the secretariat of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria in Abuja. Other doctors expected to appear before the tribunal which commenced a four-day sitting on Tuesday include Fibian Osuji, Freeman Miri, Sunday Elusoji, Iyiola Joseph, Obafemi Kuye, Mukaila Oyewunmi, Erinfolarin Adebayo, Bolanle Adeyemi Ola, Rasaq Akintunde Akindele and Olaide Festus Bolaji.

They will be appearing before the tribunal for the first time, while the trial of Amos Essien, Asemota Omoruyi Orhi, David Udoh and Adolphus Oraifo had commenced. Suntai’s doctor and Chief Medical Director of Taraba State Specialist Hospital, Dr. Zakari Aliyu, is undergoing trial at the tribunal. He is facing one-count charge of divulging information regarding the health record of Suntai, which was published by media houses even though he was said to have relocated to the United States for a very long time.

According to the charge sheet, Aliyu’s conducted himself “infamously in respect to rule 44 of the code of Medical Ethics in Nigeria 2008 edition and punishable under section 16(1)(a) and (2) of the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act, Cap. M8 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.” Although he was also absent at the first sitting, Aliyu in a letter to the tribunal requested that his case be shifted to a later date.
