At Beri market in Mariga local government area of Niger state, four persons including a soldier were confirmed dead. Eight persons sustained severe injuries in the explosion which occurred when the market was full to capacity It was gathered that the explosion caused fears among the people who scampered for safety. Our correspondent reports that the grenade was allegedly mishandled by the deceased soldier, Mohammed Tanko, a private who was on a military approved pass. It was learnt that the soldier, Tanko, 22year old private soldier, was attached to 145 battalions Maidiguri and was in Beri community on a pass. He was in possession of 2 hand grenades. An eyewitness told our correspondent that the soldier was displaying one of the grenades around Mahauta area of the market in Beri to his friends when the explosion occurred. He and the three other persons were confirmed dead. Confirming the incidence, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, has given the names of those who died during the explosion as Wasila Adamu and Ruma Bello, both 14 years old and a 20-year old girl, Kulu Garba.
The police spokesman has also confirmed  that Aisha Musa, Alhaji Tukur Umaru  ,Barmo Gado Maikifi, Ishaya Timothy,Saliha Audu, Balki Salisu ,  Tukur Sadiq  and Mohammad Danbujaja  all of Beri  sustained various injuries.
He has confirmed the recovery of one hand grenade at the scene of the incidence noting that the area had been cordoned and cleared by Police Anti Bomb Unit.
The police spokesman added that Niger state commissioner of police, Zubairu Muazu, has ordered for an in-depth investigation into the incidence just as he enjoined the people of the area to remain calm assuring that the police was on top of the situation.
Corpses of those who died during the incidence were deposited at the Kontagora General Hospital where those who sustained injuries are being treated.
