A committee constituted by the Katsina State government has said that 40 per cent of health workers in the state are either casual staff or volunteers. Chairman of the committee, Dr Labaran Doro, who disclosed this while handing over their report to the state government, said urgent action must be taken to address challenges facing the sector.

He said the committee also discovered that staff and equipment are not equitably distributed among health centres. He said short-term measures must be taken to provide succour, including provision of drugs at health facilities. Responding, Governor Aminu Masari said misapplication of resources had greatly affected sectors in the state.

He lamented that only N7 million was allocated to the state College of Health Sciences as against N35 million allocated for almajirai feeding. He reiterated the determination of his administration to accord priority to health, agriculture and education.
