The Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) has called on Nigerians to be quick in alerting veterinary authorities about the unusual death of animals, especially non-primates around their home environments and farms. It also called on Nigerians to be hygiene conscious as a way to prevent contracting the deadly Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, even though there are no recorded cases of infection in the country at presence.

The call was made by the registrar VCN Dr. Markus Avong, following recent World Health Organisation (WHO), confirmation of re-occurrence of the EVD. It reported on 19 July that Guinea had 22 cases and four in Sierra Leone.

Avong said it was not time for Nigerians to rest on their oars and be careless about their health and personal hygiene as it is important for every Nigerian to have the sense of security over their daily health habit.

He said: “We thank God for government’s proactive measures to stamp out the deadly Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, out of the country. But it is still very important for Nigerians to strictly observe and practise simple personal hygiene.
